The Kanawha State Forest Foundation, Inc. was chartered in 1989 and is a nonprofit group organized under Section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code. Membership is open to any person by paying annual dues. The Foundation operates under adopted By-laws and, accordingly, board members and officers are elected at the Annual Meeting. Board members serve terms of five years and serve no more then three consecutive terms. Current Board members are:
As one Board member once proclaimed, we are "motley crew of people who love the Forest." Her words were not meant disrespectfully, but rather, those words characterize the diverse backgrounds of the people who belong to the Kanawha State Forest Foundation. There is no requirement or qualification to be a member, apart from a love of the Forest. The focus of the organization is on participation and dedication to the State Forest, regardless of background, training or other experience. The essential criterion is an interest in advancing the Forest as a resource for relaxation and enjoyment of nature.
